Allan does the Highland Lion's Club Biathlon every year and this year I got talked into doing the 5 mile run. In 2004, Allan and I were a team (I ran and he rode), but this year he wanted to do it all by himself. Vanessa and I were maybe going to do the whole thing by ourselves, but the day before she realized that her bike tires were dry-rotted. Hallelujah! So she and Craig were a team and I just signed up for the run. I hadn't run in over 2 weeks, so I had no expectations of a stellar performance. I just wanted to beat my time of 7 years ago (55:45). I thought that I'd probably do closer to 51 or 52 minutes. Allan had a goal of around 1 hour 21 minutes total for a 5 mile run and 15 mile bike.
Well, the heat was terrible, the course was hilly, and I was too cocky! I ended up walking WAY too much of it and finished in 55:41. Boo! What a waste of $25! I felt better after hearing that other people that I consider "real runners" also walked bits of it, but still was not happy at all with my performance.
Allan, on the other hand, did a fantastic job. He finished his run in 38 something and his ride in 44 something for a total of 1:22:15. He won 3rd place in his age group! Yay, Allan!!
Ness ran it in 56:20 and Craig did the ride in 1 hour. Pretty good for his first bike race ever!
