Oh, what a night! Allan left for Vegas last night so it was just me and the girls at home. No big deal, we've done it before many times. Last night, though, was just one of those nights! Anything that could be hard was hard!
After Harper's dr. appt, we ate dinner at my Mom's. We got home at about 6. I looked forward to playing for awhile, baths, and bed - our usual routine.
To begin with, both girls were slightly crabby. They both have little colds and Harper had just gotten 3 shots in her leg. I had to drag them both upstairs for bath. When I tried to put Harper in, she immediately began screaming. I don't think the water was too hot, but she absolutely refused to go in. It was 6:45, so I asked her if she was ready for jammies and bed. She said yes. She had had a 2 hour and 20 minute nap for Allan earlier in the day so I was doubtful, but not about to pass up an easy early bedtime! Delaney was happy to get to take a bath by herself and I had told her we could watch a recorded episode of Kate Plus 8 before she went to bed. I thought it was smooth sailing from here. Wrong.
Just as I was getting Delaney's jammies on her, Harper started crying. I went to get her and took her down with us to watch TV. Delaney kept asking if the show was over yet. I knew it was because she didn't want to go to bed. At about 7:30, I took both girls upstairs. Harper eagerly went into her own bed to sleep. Delaney was a little fussy, but I read her two chapters of her Junie B. Jones book to appease her and postpone lights out a little longer. I started to say her prayers with her, eager to get back downstairs to finish my own jobs before I could sit down in front of the TV to veg some more. As soon as I said the words, "and keep Daddy safe while he's on his trip" Delaney started crying. Not just whimpering, bawling. Inconsolable. I knew that Allan was in the middle of his flight, so we couldn't even call him. I held her, talked to her, prayed for her, tried everything. Finally, I got a family picture and put it on her nightstand. She positioned her flashlight so it would shine on his face. Then she picked it up and kissed him. Pitiful. She was still doing the loud hiccups that come after a big cry, but I thought she was winding down and I slipped out of the room. That was around 8:15.
After packing lunches, unloading the dishwasher and folding some laundry, I headed back upstairs to check on Delaney and turn off her flashlight but she was still whimpering. I felt so sorry for her that I let her go sleep in my bed on Daddy's pillow. I had to bring the family picture along, too, and leave the light on so she could see it. I got her settled and went down to watch one show. When I came back up at 9:30, she was still awake! I was getting frustrated, so I took her to her bed, turned off her lights, and said it was time to go to sleep because she had music class and school tomorrow. I didn't hear another peep...
...until 12:30 am when the thunder started. Delaney is so sensitive to storms and usually hears thunder long before Allan or I do. She came flying into my room again. I snuggled up next to her and two seconds later Harper (who NEVER wakes up during storms) woke up crying. I walked down the hall to get her (might as well have them both in my bed). When I went to lay her down, my hand landed in a big wet spot. In the 10 seconds I was gone, Delaney had peed through her Pull-up! She said she was sorry and I know she was. I put a towel over the wet spot for Harper to lay on (no way was I going to change the sheets!) and went back to Delaney's room to get a new pull-up and dry PJs. Finally, we were all ready to get back to sleep.
To top it all off, I had set my alarm for 6 so that I could get showered and ready before the girls were ever awake. Guess who woke up at 5:45 - both girls - an hour before their normal wake up time!!
